Conducting workplace investigations

An investigation is an important part of the process should you be considering disciplinary action against an employee particularly if said action could be formal disciplinary action. The lack of a proper investigation is increasingly flagged up at Employment Tribunals to demonstrate failure in process so it is important that you can demonstrate that you have done things correctly.

This simple flowchart can help those handling the process by looking at each step- you could consider issuing it to those tasked with undertaking the investigation where they initial each bit as completed- this could be very good evidence of good practice should you ever be challenged on it.
